My Epic Battle with Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

According to the CDC website, "hand, foot, and mouth disease is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. However, it can sometimes occur in adults."  I also read in more than a few places that it's mild.

Mild my itchy, blister covered right foot.

Hannah was the first one to get HFM, she was covered in blisters, I don't think they itched.  She didn't seem much different than usual, a little fussier and needier, she wouldn't eat food, only drink bottles.  The blisters scabbed over and now they're almost gone.

Abby and Eli barely developed any symptoms.  Abby had itchy feet one night.  Eli had a fever, itchy feet and a very sore throat for a few days.

And then there is me.

Tuesday I had a fever and was so achy I wanted to cry.  Wednesday my throat started to hurt as blisters popped up in my mouth and on my hands and feet.  Thursday the blisters got worse and the itching became intense.  Thursday night I was in tears, the itching was awful and it alternated with pins and needles feelings.  Friday morning I woke up with less itching more needles of fire and twice as many blisters.

Spotty hand blisters. This picture doesn't really do them justice, my fingers look like a topagraphical map.

Itchy feet suck! Walking on pins and needles is no fun.

My arsenal against HFM.

I called my doctor's office on Thursday morning asking for anything that would help, the advice nurse said it's really rare for adults to get it, yeah, thanks, I know, I read that too.  She told me I could take zytrec, really?  I took 50 mg of benadryl and the rest of the day is a blur.  My plan from there on was to remain as drugged as possible so that I would sleep thru most of this.  Thankfully my Mom and husband were both around to help, well, do everything.  And have I mentioned how much I love Motrin, Benadryl and my big gun pain killer!?

This morning I woke up and the itching is greatly resolved, the needles are gone too.  The latest development is that I have lost feeling in the tips of most of my fingertips.

I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

I guess there is a pretty good outbreak of HRM this year.  It's contagious when the person has a fever, before the blisters ever appear, so you don't know it's coming.  Awesome.  Wash your hands, a lot.  In case you get it here is what I found helped and didn't help.

*Epsom salts soaks in tepid or even cold water.  Heat aggravates the blisters, a lot.
*Motrin and Benadryl round the clock.  The night I was so achy the Motrin didn't touch it so I added a big gun pain killer I had leftover in my cabinet (yes I save my meds and I'm glad I did).
*Hydrocortisone cream, this helps for about 30 seconds, the best part is rubbing it into my hands like lotion let me kind of scratch and rub them without my husband or Abby noticing and yelling at me not too!
*Sore throat spray stung, a lot, but it helped a little.  I just kept cool water with me at any time, it was the only thing I could swallow that didn't burn my throat.  Also, it was the only way I could swallow.
*In desperation I tried using tucks pads and dibucaine ointment (I told you I was a med keeper, these were leftover from having Hannah).  They're for swollen, itchy tissues, the dibucaine is a topical analgesic, it didn't really work, but it was worth a try.
*I didn't like the calamine lotion, it made my hands and feet to dry and it didn't help the itching.
*The neosporin works to soothe the blisters if you accidentally scratch them open, I did this with a few on my legs.
*I put vaseline on the blisters around my lips and nose that are itchy and dry.

  1. Thanks! I think I finally figured out what I have! Am on a Hawaii vacation. Half way through I started to feel run down, got a fever and sore throat (no blisters in mouth) on Monday. I woke up with what I thought for sure was bed bug bites from the condo we rented. They were itchy at first than started to burn. It is now Thursday and my feet and hands are worse (look like yours!) and I feel like I'm walking on broken glass! I called a physician friend when I thought it was bed bugs and got her to phone in some prednisone for the swelling which I thought was the cause of my pain. Any other tips?

    1. I am so sorry to hear that you got this in Hawaii! Tropical paradise vacation and HFM are no fun. I would suggest lots of Motrin/Advil/Ibuprofen round the clock for pain relief and benadryl. Those were the only things that really helped. Mostly I just kept myself drugged so I could try to sleep thru the whole experience. Of course you're on vacation and probably don't want to sleep thru the whole thing.

Be forewarned that when the blisters go away you will probably have very calloused fingertips and then the skin starts to peel away. It is disgusting. I kept fingernail clippers with me at all times so I could trim away the skin. And then the new skin underneath is so tender. Also, your fingernails and toenails will peel away from the cuticle up. It's also very gross and kind of painful. The whole recovery takes awhile.

I really hope that you don't have such a severe case and that you recover so much faster. And I hope you have a great rest of your vacation, despite the HFM.

    2. I'm fighting this thing too. Aloe Vera juice! Drink it to help the sore throat. Apply liberally with coconut oil and tea tree oil mixed together. Ice helped my burning feet. Tylenol and I have tramadol for arthritis. If I were you, I would have arthritis before getting this cause I haven't even noticed the arthritis in days and the tramadol REALLY helps! Thanks for verifying the Epsom salt works, I'm going to go try that now.

  2. Thanks for the info (though not real encouraging!) and the well wishes. I am on a trip with my husband daughter and in-laws. This is an action packed family. Surfing lessons, snorkeling, hiking and scuba diving is what we have been doing and lots more planned. I had to skip today and stay in to give my poor pins and needles feet a rest. They lag behind my now numb finger tips. Yours and my hands look identical! I have acrylic nails- not for long I guess! So glad you posted this blog, it has helped me come to terms with my unexpected Hawaii event! Ran into some local Drs having lunch(ob/gyn- which I too used to work for). I told them my story and showed them my hands (which they gasped at) and they agreed HFM. It seems there are a lot of cases here, in kids of course. Thanks again, am glad for the heads up on what may come next- apparently I'll survive :)

  3. hey, after reading your blog i'm almost certain i have HFM! its been a horrible experience so far! its been a week and the rash is still there and my fingertips are so numb and have lost all feeling, i just want to understand how long did they stay that way? and when you say the skin peels away, do you mean you peeled it off with the fingernail clipper or it just slowly peels off naturally like a scab? is there anything i could do to get my normal skin back? and how long did it take for the blisters off your hands and feet to fully disappear, cuz its been 8 days with me and they're still there ! they're a lot less than they were at the beginning , but the stiffening of the fingertips is getting worse, so any advice on how to speed that last bit up? thank you so much in advance ! xx

    1. Oh bummer, you're not going to like this, there's not much you can do to speed up the process. At least I couldn't figure it out. I think this is one of those, let it ride it self out kind of things.

From what I remember, the skin old calloused skin on my fingertips kind of separated itself from the new skin underneath. Then it would start to peel away from the nail and I would obsessively pick at it because I just wanted it to go away. That is when I would get ahold of some and trim it away with the clippers. It was SO GROSS. I carried nail clippers around with me for days. I didn't notice it as much on my feet. But then the nails started to pull away from the nail bed and that took forever because you just have to wait for your nails to grow out.

I used a lot of exfoliating scrubs on my hands and feet during that time. See if you can find one of those creams that is supposed to dissolve dead skin, like Pretty Hands and Feet, I found something similar to it in the nail care section at Wal Mart, I couldn't find anything at Target. And use lots of lotion too.

The whole process is gross and kind of makes you feel like a leper, but the good news is now you're immune so you shouldn't ever get this again. Good luck and get well soon.

    2. Jill....the numbness is a great concern to me. I know this was many years ago since you had this. I had a severe case like yours and still have it. Lots of the severe pain has went away but the numbness is still there. Did your feeling ever come back? Did you have to do something to cause it to come back? Thank you so much for writing this. Many doctors says it's something simple. They have apatently never had it. I was in severe pain and couldn't eat hardly anything for 3 or 4 days. The fourth day I ate despite the pain. I chewed very well and it had to be the best meal I've had in a while. Anybody else who gets this, just know it does pass. They say Rhus Tox helps it. I'm thinking it may did help me get past the pain quicker. You can find it with homeopathic stuff or amazon. I got it one day shipped. It was worth the money to have it fast. The pain from this is excruciating and I am sorry they don't regulate cases of this better to help it from spreading. The bad cases are caused from coxasakie A6 strain. A strain that seems to come around more often than used to. You can catch this again if it's a different strain. Hopefully none of us do. I knew the pain Job must have suffered and it was a humbling experience. It helped me be great full for things I never even thought about, like going to pee or pour a cup of water. Just doing any thing was a serious challenge. I am so thankful others are sharing their stories cause it's hard to find real info online about it. My son seen the doctor and they sent hin home saying they didn't know what it was. I am disappointed in the doctors. They put him on antibiotics even, when that couldn't help any being this is a virus. Plus it makes him more immune to antibiotics, etc. Getting my feeling back will make me very happy and I hope this don't do permanent damage. Take care all and revolver quick. Try the rhus tox. And hopefully it'll help it pass quicker.

  4. OMG, I am glad to come across your post. My baby got it first and the sore throat hurt him so so bad... He couldn't eat or drink unless we keep him on some pain meds for a while. Now, experiencing it first hand, it's NO FUN.

And, MILD symptoms in adults?!? AS IF!!! I'm about 3 days in and I'm dying. My hands look exactly like yours. I thought it is just literally hand, foot and mouth, but I seem to have some on my nose and ears. Sounded like you did too? Did you get some on your nails, that's why they were peeling? My nails do not look like there is any in them, so maybe they'll be ok?

  6. I guess I'll add my HFM story since it's currently been going on since Monday. I got it from my daughter (3 1/2) so I guess I never had it as a kid. The worst part about it and the only thing that I am having a hard time handling is how painful it is to swallow. It really feels like I'm swallowing broken glass. Even with water. I have been using cough drops non-stop which helps keep my throat from drying out. The dryness makes swallowing the worst. I have the itchy bumps all over my hands and the bottoms of my feet which hurts really bad to walk on. I also have it on my face. It's in my mustache, beard (yep, I'm the only guy to post I guess) on my nose, cheeks, inside my ears and all over my forehead and into my hairline. It's really miserable stuff that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. That said, if I didn't have the throat soreness, I could handle the rest. I wish I could dope up and stay in a daze till it's done but I have to watch my daughter while my wife works so that's not an option. I haven't found anything to take that has helped me much at all. Ibuprofen is weak, the numbing throat sprays are really weak and the hydrocortizone relieves itching for 10 seconds if that. Did you disinfect everything in your house after your ordeal? Were you around other people after your symptoms went away? I read on CDC that the virus can still be contagious for weeks after the symptoms are gone. It kind of looks like my wife and I are going to have a Christmas away from everybody in both families if that's the case.

  7. Wow, I'm so glad I'm not alone. So I read online that this was like a 7-10 day experience from hell... hmmm my son had it abt 3 1-2 weeks ago and now I have it. Started with a fever from hell, then the worst sore throat of my life, and now the blisters are starting up. My misery started Thursday and I too am a nurse. Its Sunday morning now, Will I be able to work Saturday?? (THIS BLOWS BTW). I don't remember being so miserable, ever! And it didn't seem to bother my son that much. Me, planning my funeral. This is miserable. It's like I've burned my fingertips! :(

  8. My daughter apparently got HFM at daycare. I did not even know that is what she had, and I took her to the doctor. He said she had an allergic reaction to something. She never seemed to run a fever and her spots did not seem itchy (I never saw her itch at all). Two days later I do not feel well and I am running a temperature, but other than that I feel normal. Next day I wake up itching my hands. I notice spots all over my hands (like the picture above), and I notice some sores on the inside of my nose. As the day goes on my hands start itching more and more. I go to an urgent care place. The doctor informs me that I have HFM and that there is nothing that he can do for me other than give a steroid shot. I took it. My hands continue with the tingling/itching/hurting. I can't sleep and before I laid down for bed I noticed that I now have spots on my face, neck, ears, all around my nose, on my scalp and a couple on my feet. The ones around my nose itch a little, but nothing compared to my hands. This should be a punishment in hell! I have never had anything like this and like a previous post said, I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I have been taking Benadryl, ibuprofen, and dipping my hands in ice. Nothing is really helping. I can't sleep. My family and I are going on vacation tomorrow (not one you can back out of) this should be so much fun! NOT! I hope this hurries up and runs its course, because I am not sure how much of this I can take. I am so glad my daughter did not have this bad of a case. Who ever said this was mild, obviously has not ever had it....

  9. I'm going to comment on this even though a few years have past since posted. Saw the image of your hands in a Google image search. They look just like mine. This is absolutely the worst sickness I've ever had. I'd rather have strep. My three kids and wife just got over it then I get it 10 times worse than any of them. The worse part are the sores under my nails. I cannot grip or press anything. Flipping a light switch makes me want to scream. Gargling with Listerine several times a day removed the throat blisters within 2 days.

  10. This is the worst thing I've ever had. My hands burned really bad at first. They calmed down a little bit but still hurt. I think that's because of the numbness I'm feeling in them now. It started out as feeling sick to my stomach, then moved to crazy chills which I was not even cold, and then came the sore throat. At first I was just thinking Strep Throat. About a month ago I was on antibiotics and I think that's what weakened my immune system. Next day I see a little bump on my foot which I thought was just a bug bite. Oh boy was I wrong! Later that day I notice a bump on my hand. That night my face started to scab up and before I knew it the next morning my hands were tingling and feeling extremely itchy. It hurt just to move then and they were very itchy. Went into the hospital and was diagnosed with HFMD. No doubt this is the worst I've ever experienced. The pain in my hands the first two days was absolutely insane! I cannot believe they can't give you anything that helps, it's unbelievable! The doctor prescribed me norco but it does nothing for the pain. I tried taking two but it just made me feel really weird so I'm sticking to just taking one in the day time. Like other I would never wish this upon anyone. WORST thing ever. It hurts to walk now more than ever. I'm hoping there's only a couple more days of this but this is only day #6 since I started to show symptoms. I've been taking echinacea, halls, and drinking a lot of water so I can stay hydrated. I think this is a very severe case since all the pictures I look at don't look anywhere as bad as mine. Right now my hands are covered in bumps and are very red. My right foot is worse than my left but they both hurt, right hurts REALLY bad. Left not so much. My face is covered in dried scabs that are really hard not to peel. I've heard it's not good to peel. I might post some pictures so others can compare but it looks pretty gross and don't know if people want to see this.

  12. HFMD has got to be worse in adults! I caught it a week ago from my two youngest kids, and I am just now starting to feel human again. I am still waking up to new mouth and hand blisters, though, after having them for five days. The mouth blisters are so painful. Eating is a challenge. I hope it goes away soon!

    ReplyDelete
  13. So I just caught it from my 15 month old daughter who got it from her 15 month well baby visit. Apparently from the tables and chairs in the waiting room. Go figure that she ended up getting it from clinic. Anyway, I got it about a week after she did. It's was bad for her to go thru it. Fussy as heck wanting to be carried then not wanting to be carried all day long. Then refusing to eat. At least she was still willing to nurse (still breastfeeding). But I started with a fever that went away in less than 12 hours but then had body aches that went away with ibuprofen. Sore throat came after and then the blisters appeared. First on my hands which were extremely itchy and painful. Then 24 hours later they showed up on my feet abd yes, felt like walking on broken glass. Luckily I have s pair of really soft socks that are helping with me getting around. I'm on day 5 since the fever and blisters are drying up. Little better on the soles of my feet but how long does it take for the new skin to regenerate? And I'm worried my nails may be affected as most of my blisters were near the tips of my fingers. How long did it take for the nails to grow back? Not looking forward to the recovery as at least I'm home and can work from home while I'm out of the contagious phase (told 7-10 days at home should be safe). One I return to work, everyone's going to see my nasty fingers :(

  14. My son had this 8 months ago while I was pregnant. So glad I didn't get sick when he did. But now I have it. And I felt like I was going to die on Monday.

Sunday I was feeling sore and achy. We just had Fruendsgiving the night before. So I figured I was just sore and tired from planning and hosting and cooking while trying to keep my kids under control all day.

Well them Monday morning it all hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't know what it was until today. Which is Wednesday. Monday my fiancé stayed home I literally slept all day until only got up to nurse my son. I took four doses of DayQuil throughout that day and barely ate because my throat felt like pure hell!!!

I noticed a rash on my both of my forearms on Tuesday which can happen when I stress out from planning things. So I didn't think much of it. Took a hot shower that night was able to eat homemade chicken noodle soup. The shower helped my back. But today i figure the heat made my rash worse. I was sweating all night and had hot and cold chills throughout all of Tuesday.

Today when I saw the bumps all over my hands I knew what it was.

I pretty much have been washing my hands with diluted white vinegar with tea tree oil and I bought a homeopathic remedy from my local drug store. Mercuruis solubis.

I dint have blisters yet. But on Sunday my lower lip felt bumpy and I had put vinager on that so I figure it stop it in it tracks that day. And it would help stop it on my hands.

I read that tea tree oil and vinager are s good natural cleaner to spray your house with. But I am also using it on my hands.

So far no sores are on my feet or in my mouth. Just my forearms and hands.

I know this is an old blog. But anyone that comes upon I might help with what has helped me so far.

When my son had it it barely phased him. He was just more clingy and loss his appetite for a day. I feel like a war went on inside me. It was almost double the pain of the flu. Especially my throat. My arms itch but the vinager helps that and I have been using coconut oil to after the vinager tea tree oil wash drys.

Lots of honey and lemon tea. Cold drinks hurt more and drinking Gatorade at room temperature.

Hope this helps someone out there.

  15. This really is a horrid virus!

I'm only on day 4 of this after catching it off my nearly three year old daughter who is nearly recovered but my three month old son has now got it too. I'm hoping he makes a fast recovery like my daughter. It's much more severe in adults and I'm pretty certain mine will last longer than the usual 7-10 days Google talks about. I'm petrified of the thought of fingernails and toenails peeling! I can't imagine having to go through that and looking after two little kids at the same time. Thank you for taking the time out to document your experience. You give hope that there is an end to all this...albeit a time consuming process!

  16. This is a great post! Thank you!
In relation to the scrubs you used, did it help with the thicker skin too? I have thick callussed skin in some areas that I find annoying at the moment. I know time is meant to heal all things but if there is anything I can do to help it along, I'm willing to try! I also carefully cut away any areas of skin that have lifted. I'm dreaming of a miraculous foot and hand soak that just takes it all away. (Hmmm maybe a regular foot soak will do?) Not sure if you will respond to this since it's been a while since you had this virus but thank you if you do come across this reply :)

  17. Day 1 wednesday: went to work at 7 am feeling fine. By 10 am I had extreme fatigue, head and bodyaches. I struggled to drive home and kept a 103 fever till Friday morning. Still had no idea I had hfm.
Day 3: went to work with a sore throat thought I was on downhill slope, while at work I noticed small red bumps on my hands appearing. By that evening my mouth, nose, hands, and feet had sores all over.
Day 4-6: saturday night my hands were so swollen and on fire i broke dowm and went to er where i was told it was not hfm still. Got a steroid shot and sent home. sores have went from small to large almost covering hands completely in Indian red rash. Embarrassed to go in public. Thumbs, index fingers, and middle fingers are completely numb. Went to primary doctor today tuesday and she said it was hfm and gave me niacin mouthwash and said ride it out. I'm terrified of the nails and skin falling off...and when to go back to work. 35 year old male...family of 5. 19 month old started off, then wife, then 8 year old, then me. I'm the only one diagnosed with hfm.

  19. Felt a bit rundown on Saturday night, went out the night before with some friends and figured I went a little to hard maybe. Felt fine the next day.

    Then came today:

Had some itchy hands in the morning, it's getting warm out, snows melting, and I have seasonal allergies so probably just that. Come noon, I have a very important business lunch with a new supplier, my hands are so itchy I can barely keep them from shaking. This is really weird for allergies so just in case, just don't shake hands by standing far enough back when introducing myself.
Try to get some paper work done to ride out the day but decide I'll hit the medi-clinic early so I don't need to wait hours to see a doctor, and can't concentrate anymore.
Diagnosed HFM. Sounds horrible, feels worse. No recommended treament. Tried calamine lotion, works for a couple minutes, just dried my hands out more than anything. Heard about an oatmeal bath, brilliant. Worked for some relief while in the bath but that's about all. Wife brought me hydrocortisone cream, it more acts as a lubricant in aiding the itching. It does absolutely nothing. Popped an over the counter sleeping pill about an hour ago, normally knocks me out if I need one.

This is day 1. By what others have posted, I believe I am going to die.

  21. Don't play video games-especially during July-Sept. It lives and spreads through heat and sweat. Attack blisters with Benadryl Extra Strength Itch relief spray. The only thing that I know of that can kill the blisters as they "START" to appear is "ERYTHROMYCIN TOPICAL SOLUTION USP 2%" Only a Dr or Dermatologist can prescribe it to you. Good luck people and yes fingernail clippers on ur keychain always to snip away dried up skin on finger tips for sure.

  22. I'm so glad I found this blog! MY 11 month old son had HFM and he had s few blisters and mostly the rash. He cleared up within a week and it didn't seem to bother him much. I started with a single blister on a fingertip that progressed to multiple blisters on that hand and the other and my feet. I read that adults get milder cases than children so I was hopeful.... not so much! I didn't have the sore throat. I have very mild rash, but these blisters are horrible on my hands and feet! And the blisters are still popping up after the initial one 6 days ago. They appear to be coming in stages. At this point my fingertips are starting to go numb but the newest blisters are hurting pretty bad now. I've tried the Epsom salts and it seemed to dry me out more than anything else. MY hands and feet feel as if they are going to rip with each step and everything I touch. The horrible burning in both my hands and feet have subsided but again where the newestimate blisters are, that is where most of the pain is now. I dread the peeling fingertips as I am in the interviewing process of a great new job and I had to postpone my shadowing session. I hope this goes away soon!! I'm sorry everyone has experienced this but I'm glad I'm not alone!

  23. I have this exact same thing, and it's agony. Nothing worked for me, except: flat, cold packs from the freezer. I put them in a baggie and put my feet on them. It provides so much relief on the feet at night! I also have those "shapes" that stay frozen. In a bag, I wrap my fingers around them.

  28. Being Herpes is just like been through hell; well special thanks to Dr Imoloa his powerful Herbal cure for healing me from Herpes disease. I was diagnosed of this disease in the year 2014. Thou I was taking my medications but I was not myself. Until last month My friend came to me and told me that he saw many testimonies on how a great powerful herbal Doctor cured people from Herpes disease. Thou I never believe in Herbal medications, I said to myself seen is believing I took his name and searched it on GOOGLE, I saw many testimonies myself. Quickly, I copied his email I emailed him, And I told him to get the listed items needed to prepare my cure because by then i have little faith in him, few days later he message me that he is through preparing the cure. So he sends it to me through DHL Courier service. I got my parcel, it was a herbal cure as described by Dr. IMOLOA. I took the herbal cure and after taking it for two weeks and some days. He told me to go for check up, I went to the hospital and had a test, and I was cured. Quickly I called him and tell him what happened he congratulated me. I promise to tell the world about him.
